There’s a short window in life where everything changes — but you can still pause long enough to remember it.
A maternity (or “bump”) session isn’t about stiff posing or trying to look like someone else. It’s about you as you are right now: the anticipation, the quiet confidence, the nerves, the excitement… and the love that’s already there before your baby arrives.
At Rose Cottage Studio in Lurgan, maternity sessions are calm, unhurried, and designed to make you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in.

When is the best time for bump photos?

The sweet spot for most maternity sessions is between 28–34 weeks.
Your bump is beautifully defined, you’re usually still feeling fairly comfortable, and we’ve got time to capture a full variety of looks without you feeling rushed or exhausted.
If you’re expecting twins or you’re feeling ready earlier, we can absolutely plan around that too.

What to expect from a maternity session (no awkwardness, promise)

Most clients tell me the same thing at the start:
“I’m not sure what to do in front of the camera.”
That’s completely normal — and it’s my job to guide you through it.
Your session will be:
  • Relaxed and gentle (no pressure, no forced smiles)
  • Guided with simple direction so you always know what to do with your hands, posture, and expression
  • Focused on flattering light and angles that feel natural and timeless
  • A mix of classic portraits + real moments, so your images don’t feel overly posed
If you’d like your partner or children included, we’ll build that in too — those family frames often become the ones people treasure most.

What should you wear for maternity photos?

You don’t need a huge wardrobe. You just need something that feels like you.
A few options that photograph beautifully:
  • A fitted dress that shows the bump shape
  • Soft knitwear (cosy, timeless, flattering)
  • A simple shirt or blouse with jeans
  • Neutral tones for a clean, classic look (cream, beige, black, white)
If you’re unsure, send me a few photos of outfit options before your session and I’ll help you choose what will work best on camera.

Studio maternity photography in Lurgan (and why it’s ideal)

One of the biggest benefits of a studio session is consistency — especially in Northern Ireland where the weather can change by the minute.
At Rose Cottage Studio, you’ll have:
  • A warm, comfortable space (especially important if you’re tired)
  • Beautiful, controlled light for clean, flattering portraits
  • Privacy to relax, change outfits, and take breaks when needed
  • A calm environment that keeps everything simple
No stress. No rushing. Just a lovely experience and photographs you’ll be proud to hang on your walls.

A note for anyone feeling self-conscious

Pregnancy can be amazing… and it can also be a lot.
If you’re feeling a bit self-conscious, you’re not alone — and you don’t need to “wait until you feel confident” to book.
My approach is always:
  • gentle direction
  • flattering light
  • natural posing
  • and a pace that suits you
The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is honest, beautiful photographs that feel like you.

Booking your maternity session (and what happens next)

If you’re thinking about bump photos, it’s worth booking early — especially if you want a weekend slot.
Once you enquire, I’ll help you with:
  • choosing the best date (based on your due date)
  • outfit guidance
  • whether to include partner/children
  • the overall look and feel you want (classic, cosy, editorial, simple, etc.)
If you’d like, we can also plan ahead for a newborn session so everything feels seamless once baby arrives.

Ready to plan your bump session?

If you’re looking for maternity photography in Lurgan / Northern Ireland, and you want something relaxed, natural, and timeless, I’d love to photograph this chapter for you.
Send me a message with your due date and a rough idea of the style you love — and we’ll take it from there.
